ISO 9001 and ISO50001 Comparison and Optimization of Synergies

The ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS), first published in 1987, is a standards that provides requirements on the infrastructure of an organization, with main focus on the satisfaction of its customers with the products and services offered. ISO50001 energy management systems (EnMS), first published in 2011, is an international standard focusing on energy management. It provides organizations with a framework and a systematic approach to manage and continually improve their energy performance, energy efficiency, and energy consumption. It too provides requirements on the infrastructure of an organization. Nowadays, many customers, especially government agencies, require the supplier organizations to be certified to these standards in order to obtain their products and services. The two standards have been implemented by a wide range of organizations, including industrial/ manufacturing as well as services. They have several common characteristics and synergies as well as some distinct differences.

This presentation outlines
a) the history and objectives of each approach,
b) a summary of the principles of each methodology and
c) the different roles and responsibilities required for the implementation of each.

It then proceeds to compare the two methodologies point by point, highlighting their main similarities, differences and synergies. An implementation strategy of the two methodologies is then suggested with different scenarios, taking into consideration different decision criteria and the optimization of their synergies.

Is ISO9001 QMS a Useful Tool or a Bureaucratic Burden

The rationale behind implementing the ISO9000 QMS is that the organization will acquire a tool that will assist it in keeping its customers happy with the products and services it offers to them. This is achieved by identifying its customers’ needs and expectations and implementing the appropriate processes and controls in order to satisfy them. At the same time, since their needs and expectations continually evolve, the organization needs to have in place continual improvement mechanism in order to implement appropriate changes such that it will maintain its customers happy.

This proposal begins by summarizing the concepts/ principles which form the basis of the ISO9001 development and implementation and proceeds to compare this approach versus the one adopted by some organizations. The latter approach results in the QMS being a bureaucratic burden instead of a useful, valuable improvement tool, creating a stressful situation of crisis management for everyone in the organization. The proposal goes on to propose a methodology for QMS development and implementation, outlining the necessary management practices to be implemented, which are based on the based on the quality principles incorporated in the standard. At the same time, through my experience, I have identified necessary steps/ approach that will enhance the QMS development and implementation creating a solid foundation for the system. To my experience, this approach sets the basis for the creation of a powerful improvement tool.

ISO9001 is a quality management standard with requirements on the infrastructure of an organization, with main focus on the satisfaction of its customers with the products and services offered. Many customers nowadays require their suppliers to be certified by an independent body to the ISO9001 standard.
Lean Six Sigma on the other hand, focuses on minimizing the required resources for carrying out work and on the reduction of variation (and the resulting defects) in the effectiveness of the organization’s processes to satisfy their customers. Both have led to significant cost reduction in the organizations that have used them.

The two methodologies have many common characteristics as well as some distinct differences. This presentation outlines a) the history and objectives of each approach, b) a summary of the principles of each methodology and c) the different roles and responsibilities required for the implementation of each. It then proceeds to compare the two methodologies point by point, highlighting their main similarities and differences.
The advantages of each methodology over the other one are presented and their synergies are outlined.

An implementation strategy of the two methodologies is then suggested with different scenarios, taking into consideration different decision criteria and the optimization of their synergies.
